Wayne Rhodes for Beighton Ward
Covering Beighton, Hackenthorpe, Sothall, Drakehouse and Owlthorpe
My name is Wayne Rhodes and I’m the Labour Party candidate for Beighton, in the local council elections in May 2026
My Priorities
- Clean up our streets
- Rebuild our communities
- Restore a sense of pride in our neighbourhoods
Our streets are full of litter, fly-tipping, and anti-social behaviour. There are not enough litter bins, there’s not enough help for residents who can’t make a trip to the local tip, there’s not enough police officers visible on our streets and there’s no deterrent whatsoever to stop the balaclava clad idiots ruining our home-lives by racing illegal off road bikes up and down our streets.
Our communities feel like they’ve been forgotten. Pot holes fill our roads, our footpaths are full of weeds, grass verges and community green spaces are left to overgrow, and are cut back far too infrequently. And street trees planted 50 years ago, when our older housing estates were first built, are now so large and over bearing that some households live in a state of permanent semi-darkness.
We’ve lost all sense of pride in our neighbourhoods, which is hardly surprising. How can we expect people to have pride in their local area when our own council seemingly doesn’t. We pay our taxes, we expect far better.
I want to see this change and I will work as hard as I possibly can, to make that change happen for local residents across Beighton ward. I want to clean up our streets, I want to rebuild our communities and I want to restore a sense of pride in our neighbourhoods.
I will lobby council officers for more litter bins, and increased street cleaning in our area as well as regular community skip days days to help stop fly tipping of larger items of waste and to help clean up our streets.
I will work with the council and South Yorkshire Police to ensure a more visible presence to help deter crime, anti-social behaviour, and those illegal dangerously driven off road bikes, including more visits to our area from the specialised SYP Off Road Bike team and also extended use of the police drones which cover our area, to help rebuild our communities as a peaceful place to live and to raise your family
I will hold both Amey and the council to account to make sure that pot holes are filled quickly and correctly, that our footpaths are clean, tidy and free from weeds, and that our grass verges, green spaces and street trees are cut, trimmed and tidied so that they enrich our neighbourhoods rather than diminish them and in doing so, help to restore that sense of pride back into our neighbourhoods.
And I promise you that I will also hold the council to account when it comes to wasting tax payers money on unwanted, unnecessary schemes across Sheffield, when the money spent could be used for much needed improvements in our part of the city instead.
Sheffield Council is currently in no overall control, meaning that no political party is in charge. This has led to a lack of direction and accountability. Beighton ward itself has three councillors. Currently all three are from the Liberal Democrat Party and quite frankly they are not doing enough for local residents or for the local area.
I promise to change this. I’m not willing to accept low standards of service from Sheffield Council. In my current role as a constituency caseworker for local Labour MP Clive Betts, I spend a large part of each day holding Sheffield Council to account by raising the cases of council tenants with overdue or shoddy council repairs, or complaining about dangerous uneven pavements and potholes that are damaging cars, or chasing the council to cut back grass verges, overgrown weeds on public footpaths and huge overbearing street trees, blocking sunlight from peoples homes. These should be simply problems to solve, but It can be frustrating trying to sort these issues from outside of the council and I promise that, if elected, I will work from within to change the way the council works, for the better.
I am here to serve the people of Beighton ward and I intend to serve you well.
