Coun Mick Rooney represents Woodhouse ward and is keen to continue his work for the good of the local area and the city as a whole.

Mick was born and bred in Sheffield and apart from a three year stint at Portsmouth university and a spell in Paris as part of his studies, he has lived and worked in Sheffield all his life.

He grew up in ATTERCLIFFE, right in the middle of the heavy industry that was the essence of Sheffield. His father worked in the steel industry and his mum in a shoe shop. Hard work for very little money, something a lot of Sheffielder’s can relate to.

Mick says “If anything things are worse now than they were back then. We all have memories that we carry with us, such as playing football on Ripon Street recreation ground with it’s very painful red shale surface. I also remember the canal glowing bright orange, any fish in there would have had three heads!!”

His parents first house was hit by a German bomb. Thankfully neither they nor his sisters were in it at the time. He moved to Woodhouse in the 1970s, under slum clearance. His house on the Tithe Barn was his first with a bathroom, inside toilet and running hot water.

Mick has had five children all educated locally, He says “Sadly we lost Holly in 1990, and as a family we have never recovered from that.”

Mick is married to Lynn, a carer for adults with learning and behavioural difficulties. He has been a governor at several local schools, and since becoming a councillor, Mick has developed a reputation of being friendly, easily accessible, willing to listen and getting things done.

No frills, no hidden agenda, just trying to do the job to the best of his ability.

Mick said: “I want to make people’s lives better in some way.

“My biggest ambition for the next term would be to help to get rid of the Tories and deal with the anti-social behaviour that is blighting many of our communities.”
