Here’s a quick map on some of the things your local councillors (me, Alison Norris and Mick Rooney) have been supporting/doing in Handsworth and Woodhouse
Community Safety
Residents were understandably very concerned about the spate of burglaries just before Christmas around the Flockton estate and Retford Rd. Men with their faces covered were using e-bikes and scooters to make quick get aways down the ginnels, so it was hard for police to stop them. Residents contacted us to see what could be done to make the area more secure.
Mick and I took this to the monthly Crime and Vulnerabilities meeting in city council. The local police brought in the specialist burglary and drone teams, and some perpetrators were caught. We have also brought neighbourhood police and council officers together to walk round the area with residents. Together we looked at what can be done to make it harder for scooters and bikes to get on and off the estate.
We now have a shared plan which we are taking to Amey to get work agreed and will update you on this in the future.
Woodhouse West Bowling Club
Mick and our candidate, Danny Allesbrook, joined club members at Woodhouse Bowling Club for the re-opening of the new all-weather carpet. It was a great atmosphere, with people from all over the city joining in matches.

Do you want to stop parking on your grass verges?
In the Mauncer area the main problem was parking on verges, the wet winter meaning the ground is churned up into mud. If you want to stop this outside your home you can apply to put barrel planters on the verge. This does mean you need to take on cutting the grass as needed.
Email your name and address to highways if you want to put out planters: highways@sheffield.gov.uk
Tackling littering in our area
Around Severnside there has been a spike in people fly-tipping and littering again. We are working with housing to see if we can organise a bigger scale clean up. Last year we organised skips and ended up getting 72 tonnes of rubbish taken from homes in the Badger area, but there has been a build up again in that area, too. We will continue to report it.
You can report issues you spot on the road on FixMyStreet. Link is below. Please also get in touch with us to also inform us about the issue you reported on this site, so we can chase it up.
If you are interested in working with the excellent S13 Keep it Clean group to get regular litter picks going, please get in touch with them on Facebook.
Here's how you can tackle littering in our area
Lights on Handsworth Hill
When the new traffic lights went in on Handsworth Hill, adding a right turn to get to the new LIDL store, the timing was wrong and traffic was queuing up to the ring road. Alison contacted the council’s Highways team and officers quickly improved the timings. There are still on-going issues with the pedestrian crossing timings, and the roads need to be cleared and repaired before the work is signed off. Residents are keeping us informed and we are working with officers and LIDL managers to make sure everything gets done properly. There was a walk around with residents around the area to collectively look at the roads.
Power Cuts
Residents contacted us about repeated power cuts in parts of the ward (Beighton Road and Spitfire Estate) and Alison got in touch with Northern Powergrid. They wrote to residents affected explaining the problems and what was being done to fix them and provide back-up power in the meantime.
In the Town Hall
We agreed a new allocations policy which we will mean people applying for council housing get a more efficient service. Over 1,000 of you commented and your views improved the policy. It will now be reviewed every year to make sure it is working well. This article explains some of the changes and has a link to the new policy:
