Stopping our Greenbelt being built on
We met with members of the Save S13 Sapphire McCarthy Campaign, Jason Slade from Sheffield University’s planning department, and residents with detailed knowledge of the Farm fields, to prepare for the site-specific local plan hearing on Monday 13th October.
It was daunting for everyone, with hundreds of pages of documents, several arriving the night before the hearing. The inspector listened carefully, though, and we worked well as a team to try and get our sites dropped from the local plan.
The promised secondary school turns out to be a place-holder in case the city needs another school. There are no guarantees of a tram-train on the Barrow Hill line. Traffic levels and flood risk have been underestimated. Ecological surveys are out of date or superficial. Planners didn’t know who owned some parts of the sites.
Campaigners felt Councillors did them proud on the day. We certainly felt the campaigners did Handsworth and Woodhouse proud!

A new School Building at Brunswick
Planning permission has been granted for the stunning new building for Brunswick School, which will be much cheaper to run because of good insulation and renewable energy. That will mean more money for the children’s learning. There will also be a proper swimming pool.
Unfortunately, we couldn’t get zebra crossings included, but we will keep trying in other ways. Also, because Sport England objected to its original site, the new MUGA will be developed last. We will see if Sport England can fund some sort of alternative while we wait for it to be finished.
Bits and bobs
Mick walked around Tythe Barn with the estates team, reporting broken flagstones, weeds and bushes that needed cutting back. Mick and Alison have reported trees on Beaver Hill Road and Severnside that need pruning, as their shade is making people’s front rooms very dark. We got rubbish removed from the Stag Car Park. Case work included asking traffic wardens to tackle dangerous parking and sorting problems with benefits and funding for nursery places.
In the Town Hall
Until 17th November you can say how you think council house should be given out to people:
